I had the honor to make an opening keynote speech in Central Eastern European WEBIT 2014 Summit in Sofia to over 2000 marketing professionals about the ‘The Digital Medicine Era’. In my speech, I tried to elaborate my personal view about the healthcare transformation opportunity through technology.
Wikipedia definition of digital health is ‘convergence of the digital and genomic revolutions with health, healthcare, living, and society. Digital health is empowering people to better track, manage, and improve their own and their family’s health, live better, more productive lives, and improve society. It’s also helping to reduce inefficiencies in healthcare delivery, improve access, reduce costs, increase quality, and make medicine more personalized and precise.’
Medicines have always been disruptive innovations in healthcare and traditional Pharma business has been enjoying this journey with their stakeholders over past many decades. With the recent developments in new technologies that we are scratching the surface of, like wearable devices, quantified self, nanotechnology, big data and predictive analytics etc– there is a high chance that healthcare industry will revolutionize itself in the coming years. The revolution wave in itself brings both a great opportunity for those companies which will be able to swim above the wave as well as a threat for some.
As these micro-computers can transform information as well as store it, new digital tools now cannot only record clinical data, they can also generate medical knowledge and generate patient insights. In doing so, technology makes it possible to develop “digital medicine” that is potentially more precise, more effective, more experimental, more widely distribute than current medical practice.
